On the other hand, if the process instance is in a blocked condition or is waiting for an event then that process instance will be paged out to disk, and the memory space it was consuming will be used to run other process instances.

Checking the option for activation limit means that if the process instance is in a blocked condition, it will still stay in the memory and will not be paged out to disk until it is completed. Having this option checked will greatly affect the performance of the engine because the process instances in the memory may be waiting for an event indefinitely.

The thread count determines the number of process instances that can be executed at the same time. The default value of this parameter is eight. Setting a different value for this parameter may be done in a trial and error manner because different values have different pros and cons. If the throughput is satisfactory but the system's resources are not fully used, then you can set this parameter to a higher value; however, take note that if you specify a value that is too high it may cause CPU thrashing behavior. On the other hand, if you set a value that is too low, it will increase the use of memory but the throughput will be lowered and some of the system's resources may not be utilized.

For processes that use HTTP connection, we can modify the minProcessors, maxProcessors, and acceptCount parameters. Setting a high value for this parameter can increase concurrency of executing process instances but the throughput for the process executions may decrease. On the other hand, if the value for maxProcessors is low, then there is an increased throughput but the number of processes executed concurrently will also be limited.

The acceptCount parameter which defaults to 100 determines the maximum number of connection requests that are accepted when all the processors of HTTP are already running. When the value set for this parameter is reached then all incoming requests are discarded. If you set a low value for maxProcessors, then you can set a higher value in acceptCount so that connection requests will not be rejected.

iTunes 8, An iPod Nano, And Windows XP or Vista

Another iPod died on me after giving me company while running for a long time. Sweat, rain, heat, shocks - I guess it was too much for the poor little iPod Shuffle. This time I decided to get an iPod Nano instead of a Shuffle. The iPod Shuffle is great in regards to weight and sturdiness, however it is limited in regards to playlists and functionality. The iPod Nano just a notch more heavy in weight compared to the Shuffle and little bigger in overall size, but twice as thin as the Shuffle.

After purchasing the Nano at the local Apple Store I had to install iTunes on my laptop to put my music on this new device. I did not have to use iTunes to program my Shuffle due as I was using a little application (downloadable from SourceForge) that allowed to re-program the database every time when adding or removing songs from the Apple iPod Shuffle (copy and paste). However, this application does not work with the Nano and so I installed iTunes 8 - not knowing what kind of disaster would turn out to be. I started iTunes and let it index my database which took forever, but when I finally had it all in place I hooked up the new Nano iPod.

I started creating playlists and sort my music library, but iTunes was extremely slow. I figured it might still be indexing songs and stuff in the background, but it did not get better. So, I started a Google Search for the slowness with iTunes and apparently this started in summer of 2008 when Apple updated iTunes to version 8. I was shocked to read that now, exact one year later the same problem still persist for users of iTunes 8 on a Windows based computer. Some Apple Computer users reported the same problem, but they were in the minority. All the people who reported this problem were using Windows XP or Windows Vista - just like myself. iTunes acted extremely slow and rendered the device useless in many cases.

More research however showed that 3rd party software allows to bypass the problem and still get the same functionality out of the iPod. I tried a few tools and found that an application called "Songbird" combined with the iPod plug-in is the best way to manage playlists and songs on an iPod. Now I really love my new iPod Nano due to the fact that I do not have to use the bloat ware that Apple iTunes has become.

Conclusion: If you are considering the purchase of an Apple iPod and want to use iTunes 8 on your Windows OS based computer to load music to the device you might join the ranks of many frustrated users who are experiencing this very problem. Apple has not provided a solution since September 2008 from what I can tell which is not a good way to promote products.

Some Ways to Keep Your Electronic Medical Records Plan Moving Ahead

The most common question I get writing this column is: 'Why is it taking so long to implement electronic medical records?' Our initial 18-mo project turned out in about three years, instead. Though this seems a bit cautious to some colleagues, people in IT and project management industries commended our careful approach to the situation. It's well-known that Internet Technology system implementations (such as EMR) fail up to 50 percent of the time. A solid plan must be in place, taking into account any unforeseeable circumstances which could change the time frame. For example, our journey included two new associates, two hurricanes, and a departure of an associate.

Your electronic medical records vendor should be able to refer someone to guide you through implementation. However, this person can be either a person with EMR experience or someone who knows about the system itself, though not so much about roll-out at a medical office. I strongly recommend taking on the services of a certified PM (Project Manager). One important thing a PM can do is turn your project into a dynamic process which can take a series of setbacks or delays. The standard calendar can't really do much to ensure this sort of follow-through.

We first implemented a Project Manager to plan the location for our new office. Our employees could use what was learned from the process, which includes how to use mind-mapping software. We have used these techniques for all major projects at our practice since then, including implementation of the electronic medical records (EMR).

For meetings and other minor projects I recommend Getting Things Done by David Allen.

The primary advantage of using a work breakdown structure is that any glitches that pop up don't completely ruin your goal to successfully implement the EMR system. Of course, at a small practice there is more schedule flexibility. A hard deadline should most certainly be set, as part of the plan for EMR roll-out. However, with a proper plan structure your plan can roll on with the punches instead of simply rolling over.

When we finally arrived a a place when staff had training, we posted the hard deadline to go live. There was a simulation date on a Saturday which occurred two days before launch; both dates were mandatory to attend.

Although theoretically we could have pushed the launch date back, these dates helped to keep us working together and exposed risks that were faced. Now we're about 5 months into our roll-out. The stress levels have begun to settle a bit, and we're now tweaking our templates and getting ready for the next wave of patients to introduce to electronic medical records.

The Binary Search Algorithm

The principle of a binary search can be generalized to any type of problem provided the elements of the search can form a sorted list or sequence and it is possible to make a comparison on the order in the sequence.

Playing the number game: Say we have a number range from 0 to 100, and now you have to pick the number I'm thinking of and depending on your guess ill answer with either "correct", "higher" or "lower". What number would you choose? The binary search provides the quickest solution to this problem; the number you should choose is 50.

The algorithm is one of the most efficient methods for locating the position of an element in a sorted list. The way it functions is by going straight to the middle of the list and checking whether the value is greater than, less than or equal to the element it's looking for. If equal to, then the element has been found, if not, then the algorithm eliminates half the list from consideration, and repeats the procedure on the remaining half. Thus, the number of elements needing to be checked is halved each time.

So, back to the number game: Why was "50" the best guess? Well in the best case your guess is correct, I was thinking of the number 50. In the worst case you'll either get a "Higher" or "Lower". Now think about the following, if you got "Higher" you eliminated numbers 0-49, or if you got "Lower" you eliminated 51-100, in other words, either way you eliminate HALF the possibilities. Now, let's say my response was "Higher". What would you guess after? 75. Since it's in between 50 - 100. If you didn't guess correctly, you'll be facing the similar scenario as before. You'll end up eliminating half the possibilities and eventually guessing correctly (assuming of course the number I was thinking of is within the bounds 0-100)

In computer programming terms, the algorithm operates on an ordered list of values and uses the order to conduct the search. So, for a list or array containing a large amount of elements the binary search will, on average, out-perform a linear search - in a list of one million items, a linear search will take an average of 500,000 comparisons to find a particular item. A binary search will take a maximum of 20. Pretty impressive huh. Beware though, as the search only works on a sorted list, if the list requires sorting first and only has a few elements then it may be faster to perform a linear search than to sort the list and then perform a binary search.

Implementing the algorithm in code is possible through recursion and it can also be implemented iteratively.

Definitions of the Terms Hacker, Cracker and Coder

Introduction

There are frequent debates about the meaning of the terms "Hacker" and "Cracker". What is a Hacker? What is a Cracker? There are no conclusive definitions and if you ask randomly 5 people on the street, you probably end up getting 5 different explanations and definitions of those terms as well.

There are numerous discussions at online communities and blogs about this subject like this one* (see link at the end of this article) by documentary film director and computer history preservationist Jason Scott titled "ASCII" at TextFiles.com. It illustrates that the problem of differing understandings and meanings of the words is for a great number of people a very serious one. This is especially true for members of the IT security community.

This particular discussion got me thinking and I decided to attempt a new a different, but at the same time also more complete definition of the terms "Hacker" and "Cracker'. I would add to that mix the term coder, because it will become important in the details of the definition of each of those terms.

Disclaimer

There are three important facts that I would like to mention first.

1. There are hundreds of definitions for the term hacker out there and they are all different ranging from portraying a hacker as an ethical and selfless whiz kid who does things for the greater good to the evil and selfish wannabe who cannot create stuff himself and thus prefers to destroy other people's work.

2. The meaning of the word hacker did change over time. People used the word in much broader terms in the past and even outside of computers.

3. Mass media put their mark on the term and helped to add to the confusion and misconception.

I recommend avoiding the use of the words whenever possible, because everybody perceives and understands it different. Especially if you are using the words in a positive context are misunderstandings just waiting there to happen. Instead of cracker, use "computer-crack" or in instead of hack, use the term "exploit" or "work-around" instead for example. However, if you have to or want o use the terms, clarify what you mean by them and not just let the terms out there on their own.

The Definitions

My definitions incorporate the changes in the computer industry and the fact that it is not the world of single mainframe computers at individual universities anymore. Computers became a commodity and a large number of users are normal people today, who are not geeks and often not have very much practical understanding of the matter at the same time.

Definition of "Hacker"

A "hacker" is for me a person who is an "advanced power user" and not necessarily somebody who is a programmer. A person who analyses software, tests it, automates requests via tools to scan a broad range of possible options in a short time-period. A person who wants to gain access and or control over another system by exploiting known security flaws, using brute force (scanning, dictionary attacks etc.) or human weaknesses and flaws (why use parents the first name of one of their child's as password so often?).

He maybe finds technical security holes by accident, but is not the one who can seek them out as well. The hacker was spending time to find out the new frequencies for AT&T, MCI or SPRINT to break their lines, scanned for valid calling card numbers, attempts to find new working credit card numbers by creating similar siblings from an existing credit card that works etc.

Definition of "Cracker"

A "cracker" is for me somebody who "eats code raw", a person who is comfortable using software debugger, mostly doing debugging at the Assembler level. A cracker enjoys dissecting other people's code and "fixes" little inconveniences and "flaws" in software, like skipping license key input screens to speed up the software installation process. Crackers are not necessarily great programmers themselves, but have a deep understanding of technology and computer software.

Definition of "Coder"

A "coder" is somebody with remarkable programming skills. A coder is this type of person who spends countless hours on something of little or no practical value (just by itself), just because he wants to figure it out. Things like writing a program that listens to IO operations of a hardware component and displays it on the screen, which looks like your TV screen, if you did not select a TV channel, showing nothing but seemingly random noise.

Each One Could be One, Two or all Three of Them at the same Time

A hacker could be a cracker and coder as well, but often are the three different types of characters found in three distinct and different persons. They can excel by working together in conjunction with each other and as part of a group.

I reduced my definitions to what kind of skills each of them has and less on what exactly each skill is being used for. That each of the people is often living in its own little world is probably true. The world they live in is not always the same world normal people perceive as reality.

Hypothetical Collaboration between a Hacker, Cracker and Coder

If you ask how the collaboration between a hacker, cracker and coder would look like, here is how I see it. The hacker would be the person who is in charge and coordinates the efforts. He is the one who has clear goals and ideas in his head. He would be the one, for example, who thinks up how a tool would have to work to do something very specific. The coder could write that tool for the hacker.

A port scanner for example (just to keep it simple) could be such a tool. The hacker needs a cracker, if the hacker encounters specific software and cannot get around it by using brute force or guessing. He would try to get a copy and have the cracker take a look at it to find flaws or have him create an altered version, the hacker could try to sneak in as replacement for the original.

By Default Neither Good nor Bad

Here is a positive example to avoid the misconception that it is all about breaking into something and stealing data etc. What they do and what they do it for are two distinct and very different things and independent of the definition.

The coder writes a piece of software. The hacker tests the software thoroughly and approaches it from all kinds of different angles. He does in essence the quality assurance. The cracker is the one who is looking under "the hood" and checks the software for deep build in flaws and errors.

Quality Assurance

In the example of a piece of security software would the coder write the interface to enter the password, the encryption routines etc.

The cracker checks the code to make sure that the encryption is strong enough and that nothing is being exposed that reduces the effectiveness of the protection, like loading the key pairs in plain text into the memory for processing and stuff like that.

The hacker checks more like things such as minimum keyword length, supported characters and flaws in the interface.

The best encryption is worthless if the password can only be a set of numbers and the password is three digits long = only 1000 possible combinations which can be tried out in no time, via a script or even manually.

The best protection software is also useless, if you can simply press ALT-F4 and close it and then be able to move on and do what you want to do anyway. The hacker is the one who would look for this kind of stuff.

Conclusion

Other common symbols, marks, characters and punctuation that have keyboard shortcuts include: copyright and trademark symbols, bullets, em-dashes and en-dashes and paragraph symbols.

Memorizing the shortcuts for the symbols and characters you use most, or keeping a Web-based guide on the ready, can save time and frustration so computer users can get back to the task at hand.

While image blur is often unavoidable, particularly under certain circumstances, it certainly detracts from the overall impact of the image and occasionally even renders the affected image unusable. In their attempts to increase the stability of images and video footage, camera manufacturers have been working with the concept of image stabilization (IS), a series of techniques that can allow a still image photographer to shoot 2-4 stops slower (handheld) than without the IS option.

This essentially translates into less blur on average for a variety of photo situations, since the image stabilizer will counteract slight movements of the photographer that would have otherwise created a shaky image. Before delving into the details behind how stabilizers work, it's important to note that IS systems will not compensate for motion blur caused by a subject or from extreme camera movement.

While many companies have their own terminology and marketing behind their image stabilization techniques, all of the systems operate in much the same way. Without getting terribly technical, an image stabilizer uses a motion sensor to communicate to a microprocessor in the lens or digital camera body, depending on where the IS system is located. The microprocessor then takes the information and decides whether or not to activate a series of gyroscopic stabilizers that serve to counteract the movements that would have otherwise been responsible for creating a blurred image.

To understand TCP / IP is necessary to break down their meanings that encompass several concepts. On one hand you can understand TCP / IP as a stack of protocols and standards and on the other hand one can understand TCP / IP as two different protocols, TCP and IP.
TCP / IP protocol stack or as a reference model

First of all we understand as a protocol in the context of computer networks to a predetermined set of parameters that serve as a guide to computers or network devices to process the sending and receiving information. Being a computer network as a broad concept that encompasses multiple specializations for its proper operation, electrical engineers, electronic engineers and other specialists engineers have met and have agreed as to the development areas on which each specialist profession direct their efforts.
